A story of infrastructure, intelligence, and action working as one system across Africa.

Overview

Hungry Lion implemented Metacom's network, which provided them with a reliable foundation for expansion across seven African countries, as detailed in our earlier case study on the network build. As the footprint grew, a new challenge emerged: turning the data flowing across that network into decisions store managers could act on in real time.

In partnership with Servios, whose Zenios Platform combines a real-time POS system (Zenia) with Live Intelligent Service Agents (LISAs) to turn that data into on-the-ground action, Metacom's network became the delivery layer connecting queue management and kitchen precision across the estate.

Here we explore how that system works, and the impact it has had on throughput, waste, and reliability as Hungry Lion continues to scale.

The Challenge

As Hungry Lion's footprint expanded, they required more than uptime - they needed visibility and responsiveness at store level.

The business needed a system that could:

  • Keep pace with a rapidly growing store footprint without losing operational visibility
  • Surface issues - like queue build-ups - almost immediately
  • Translate sales data into practical, store-level actions like cooking quantities
  • Maintain all of these systems reliably across markets with inconsistent infrastructure
"Scaling this fast, you expect to lose some visibility along the way - that's the usual trade-off. But not anymore. We know what's happening in store four hundred as well as we know store one, at any given point. That visibility is crucial - it's what lets us keep adding stores at the pace we do, without losing what makes the first one work." - Shalendra Singh, CTO, Hungry Lion

The System

Four components work together as a single loop:

  • Metacom carries the data by providing the network layer that enables the rest of the system
  • Zenia (part of Servios' Zenios Platform) supplies high-precision, real-time POS data as the single source of truth
  • Servios 1000Eyes camera system provides a complementary, validating layer that flags queue build-ups and cross-references them against POS signals and rosters before triggering a management alert
  • LISA (Live Intelligent Service Agents) Precision Cooking turns that data into action by providing precise cooking guidance based on live sales velocity

When 1000Eyes flags a queue building, the alert - validated against POS and roster data - reaches management via the Metacom network before it builds up further. When a LISA recommends a cooking quantity, it's built on Zenia's live transaction data, delivered the same way.

"Tripling a footprint usually means loosening your grip on it - we built the opposite. Metacom gives us a network that never blinks, and the Zenios Platform turns that always-on signal into a decision at the counter, in every store at once. The agents carry the vigilance so our people can carry the judgement - we didn't take the human out of the loop, we finally gave them a way to be everywhere the moment it matters." - Marc van Olst, MD, Servios

Results and Impact

Key outcomes included:

  • Store throughput increased by 15%, driven by real-time queue detection and management alerts
  • Product availability and freshness maintained above 95%, with food waste held below 1%
  • POS data accuracy maintained at 100% measured in 5-minute intervals
  • Transaction interruptions reduced to near-zero - this stability now underpins the real-time POS data flowing into the Zenios Platform and 1000Eyes
  • Same-store revenue growth of 23% translated to an EBITDA uplift of roughly 80-100% per store, driven by operating leverage at typical QSR margins

These are the metrics that keep growth from diluting consistency at store level, even at this pace of expansion.

Conclusion

Most retail chains see profitability dilute as they scale. Hungry Lion's approach, pairing a reliable network with real-time data and action, has kept throughput, freshness, and waste metrics stable as the store count grows. Same-store growth has translated directly into per-store profitability gains.

As the footprint continues to expand, this digital ecosystem ensures that every new store is as efficient, profitable, and fresh as the last.
